For approximately ten years, I have served with the Toronto Cathay Lions Club—as Membership Chair, later Vice-President, and now Webmaster and Director. The roles changed, but the standard stayed the same: identify a need, organize practical help and follow through.

Helping a volunteer organization grow
As Membership Chair, I supported outreach and membership development. As Vice-President, I gained wider experience in planning and teamwork. As Webmaster and Director, I help maintain communications and the club’s online presence. Each role depends on volunteers sharing responsibility rather than one person doing everything.
A vision project with international reach
Lions’ September–October 2015 magazine reported that Kampala Central Lions Club in Uganda received 3,000 pairs of new reading glasses from Toronto Cathay. A published community profile connected me with organizing the glasses drive. The project showed how a local service club can use a clear need and a trusted partner to create practical impact.
Supporting children and families
A later Lions magazine reported the club’s donation of 210 children’s backpacks to Autism Ontario. Practical items do not solve every challenge, but they can help a child begin school feeling prepared and included.
Continuing the work
The club’s 50th-anniversary activities continued its emphasis on vision care and community partnership. I remain grateful to the members and volunteers who contribute time, expertise and relationships to make service possible.
What I bring from this experience
Service-club work has strengthened my skills in coordination, communication, volunteer recruitment and accountability. It also keeps leadership grounded: titles matter less than whether the project is useful, respectful and completed.
