The best first math contest is one your child wants to try, at a level where some questions feel familiar and others invite a new approach. Start with a few official practice problems, choose one event, and confirm registration with the school or organizer. A paid preparation course is not the starting requirement.
This guide is for Ontario families exploring contests as enrichment, from a younger child who likes puzzles to a secondary student ready for written solutions. It is not a ranking of tutoring companies or a promise of scholarships. The first useful goal is simple: find out whether your child enjoys this kind of mathematical thinking.

What makes contest math different?
A classroom exercise may ask students to repeat a recently taught method. A contest problem may make the method less obvious: draw a diagram, work backwards, organize possibilities, or notice that most information is unnecessary. Being quick at arithmetic can help, but it is not the whole activity.
The University of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing, or CEMC, designs contests for a range of abilities, not only students at the top of their class. Its questions become progressively more difficult. CEMC’s participation guide explains that approach.
Before choosing a contest, ask your child to try two or three problems without a timer. Notice whether they become curious about an unfinished question. You are looking for interest and a workable starting point, not a score that proves they belong.
A manageable map of first contests
These are starting points, not a list of every competition. Grade ranges describe the intended audience; each organizer has its own participation and award rules.

A child does not need to begin formal competitions in Grade 1 to enjoy them later. For an elementary student who prefers exploring at home, CEMC’s Problem of the Week archive includes a Grade 3–4 level and progressively older levels. It offers a way to try problem-solving without registering for an event.
Registration: ask the right person early
For CEMC contests, students cannot register individually. Begin with the classroom teacher, math teacher, or school math department. If the school is not participating, CEMC says students may look for another local school willing to host them. Online contest delivery still requires in-person school supervision. These are organizer rules, not optional home arrangements. Confirm the current CEMC registration process.
For Canadian Math Kangaroo, follow the Canadian organizer’s current registration instructions and the chosen location’s directions. Do not assume that a Waterloo contest registration also covers another organizer.
Send a short message with the child’s grade and the event of interest. Ask:
- Will the school offer this contest, and who coordinates it?
- What is the school’s signup deadline and total cost?
- Which grade or level should my child enter?
- Where will students write, and what materials are permitted?
- How should we request accessibility arrangements?
Check the official current-year CEMC calendar separately from the school’s signup notice. A school may need names and payment before the organizer’s ordering deadline. Put both deadlines in the family calendar.
A four-week trial before adding more commitments
The following is a suggested family routine, not an official training schedule. Two short sessions a week can be a reasonable experiment; shorten or skip sessions if the child is tired or uninterested. Use CEMC’s past contests and solutions to find the actual style of questions.
Week 1: sample the experience
Choose three approachable problems. Let the child select one, work independently, and explain any attempt. Do not turn every pause into a hint. Ask, “Would a picture, a list, or a smaller example help?” End by choosing one interesting question to revisit.
Week 2: explore a strategy
Pick one approach, such as drawing a diagram or making an organized list. For example, ask how many different pairs can be chosen from four friends. A list can reveal duplicates; a diagram may show a pattern. This is an original practice example, not a contest question.
Week 3: learn from a solution
After a genuine attempt, read the official solution together. Close it and ask the child to explain the key idea in their own words. Later, try a related problem. Copying a finished solution is not the same as being able to recognize when its method is useful.
Week 4: practise the experience
If the child wants to continue, try an appropriately timed section or paper. Follow the current instructions for permitted aids. Practise skipping a difficult question and returning later. Afterwards, decide whether the event feels like a welcome challenge or one commitment too many.

Make the review more useful than the score
Keep a small notebook with three headings: “What I noticed,” “What I tried,” and “What I would try next.” A useful entry might say, “I counted the same pair twice; next time I will keep the names in a fixed order.” That is more actionable than “I am bad at counting problems.”
After an event, ask which question was most interesting before discussing results. Separate an unfamiliar idea from an arithmetic slip, a misunderstood instruction, and a time-management issue. Those call for different next steps.
Do not compare raw scores from different contests or years as though the papers were identical. If your child wants context, use the organizer’s results for that exact contest and year. Then return to what they learned and whether they want another experience.
When would a club or class help?
A school club can provide company and discussion. A class might help when the student actively wants more instruction and you can identify the missing skill. Ask whether students explain solutions, receive feedback, and work at a sustainable pace.

Frequently asked questions
Does my child need a gifted identification?
No gifted identification is listed as a requirement for the CEMC contests above. Match the official eligibility rules and the child’s interest. Enjoying puzzles is a good reason to explore, even if classroom marks are uneven.
Should my child write above their grade?
Only if the official rules allow it and the child wants the challenge. CEMC permits students to write above their grade but not below their official grade, and limits entries within contest groupings. Confirm the choice with the supervisor. See CEMC’s grade-level rules.
Can an IEP accommodation be used automatically?
Do not assume so. Ask the contest supervisor well ahead of registration which arrangements the organizer permits and how approval works. Explain the access need without sending assessment reports to an unfamiliar provider unless necessary and securely requested.
Are contests required for university admission?
Do not treat an elementary contest as an admissions requirement. Requirements depend on the institution and program. Waterloo explicitly states that Euclid participation is not required for admission to its Faculty of Mathematics, while directing students to separate scholarship information.
