School-Day, SchoolMessenger and Safe Arrival: YCDSB Parent Setup Guide

YCDSB digital setup

School-Day, SchoolMessenger and Safe Arrival do different jobs. Setting them up before September helps families receive notices, complete school transactions and report absences without first-day confusion.

Simple distinction: School-Day is used for school payments and related activities; SchoolMessenger delivers communication; Safe Arrival is the attendance-reporting function accessed through SchoolMessenger or the designated phone service.

Each school may issue additional instructions. Use the email address and contact information the school has on file.

School-Day: payments and school transactions

YCDSB describes School-Day as its online payment tool. Schools may use it for cashless purchases, permission-related transactions, notices or activities such as scheduling parent interviews. The available options depend on what the school has activated for the child.

  • Start from the official YCDSB School-Day page.
  • Use the parent or guardian information connected to the student.
  • Confirm that every child appears under the correct account.
  • Keep receipts and review deadlines before submitting.
  • If a child or transaction is missing, contact the school rather than creating multiple conflicting accounts.

SchoolMessenger: notices from school and board

SchoolMessenger is used for family communication and access to Safe Arrival. The email entered when creating the account must match the email address held by the child’s school. If activation or student matching fails, verify the school record first.

  1. Go to go.schoolmessenger.ca or use the SchoolMessenger app specified by YCDSB.
  2. Select Sign Up and enter the email address registered with the school.
  3. Select Canada as the location and create the account.
  4. Open the activation message and complete verification.
  5. Review notification permissions on the phone and check whether messages are entering a junk folder.

The most common setup problem

The parent creates an account with a different email from the one held by the school. The system then cannot reliably connect the student. Confirm the exact address with the school office before repeatedly creating accounts.

Safe Arrival: reporting an absence

YCDSB’s Safe Arrival instructions allow parents and guardians to report a partial-day or full-day absence in advance or before the school’s bell time. The attendance function is available through the SchoolMessenger website or app. The published YCDSB instructions also list the Safe Arrival telephone number as 1-855-856-7862.

On the SchoolMessenger website or app, open the menu, select Attendance and choose Report an Absence. Future absences can be entered in advance. If the system does not show the child or the correct option, contact the school directly.

What parents should verify before September

  • The school has the correct email, telephone number, address and emergency contacts.
  • Both households understand which adults receive notices and who will report absences.
  • The student appears under the correct School-Day and SchoolMessenger access.
  • App notifications are permitted and official messages are not being filtered as junk.
  • The family knows the school’s bell time and deadline for reporting an absence.
  • Pickup, custody and medical information have been updated directly with the school.

Privacy and account safety

  • Use a unique password and do not share the account publicly.
  • Do not submit a child’s identification, health record or custody documents through an unrelated form.
  • Confirm payment details and the child’s name before completing a transaction.
  • Sign out on a shared device and review stored payment options.
  • Use official YCDSB, school, School-Day or SchoolMessenger links rather than links from an unexpected message.

Questions parents ask

Are School-Day and SchoolMessenger the same account?

No. They are different services. School-Day handles school transactions and payments, while SchoolMessenger handles communication and provides access to Safe Arrival.

Why does SchoolMessenger not show my child?

The email address may not match the school record, or the student information may not yet be connected. Confirm the exact email and student record with the school office.

Can I report tomorrow’s absence today?

YCDSB’s published Safe Arrival instructions state that future absences can be reported in advance through the available system.

What if the app is not working?

Use the official website or designated telephone method when available, and contact the child’s school directly if access problems continue. Do not leave an absence unreported because one channel failed.
