YCDSB families often hear “check the parent portal,” but there is no single portal for everything. Report cards, classroom learning, payments and attendance use different systems. This guide shows which one to use and where to start when a login does not work.
Quick answer: connectEd/Maplewood is for report cards and digital documents. Google Classroom or D2L Brightspace supports course learning. School-Day handles payments and permission forms where offered. SchoolMessenger delivers notices and includes SafeArrival for absences.
Which system should I use?
| What you need to do | System | Important login point |
|---|---|---|
| View or download a report card | connectEd / Maplewood Parent Portal | Use the parent/guardian email the school has on file and enter through the child’s school website. |
| See assignments or course materials | Google Classroom or D2L Brightspace | The teacher/course tells the student which platform to use; it is not the connectEd parent login. |
| Pay, sign permission forms or book an interview where offered | School-Day | Create a separate caregiver account and link the child with the secure-match key from the school. |
| Receive notices or report an absence | SchoolMessenger / SafeArrival | Use the email on the school record. SafeArrival is available by website, app or phone. |
connectEd / Maplewood: report cards and digital documents
- Open your child’s school website.
- Choose Parents, then the green or grey connectEd icon.
- Sign in with the parent/guardian email address the school has on file.
- Choose Personal → Digital Documents.
- Select the report card to view or download.
Do not bookmark another school’s portal endpoint as a universal login. Enter through your own school website because local links and instructions may differ. If the child or document is missing, ask the school office to verify the parent email and family record. For password help, use the YCDSB VLE support page.
Google Classroom or D2L Brightspace: class and course learning
These systems can contain assignments, resources and class or course communication. They are not the report-card portal, and they do not necessarily use a parent-created Gmail account. Follow the teacher’s instructions and the student’s board account. Some classes use Google Classroom; others use D2L Brightspace.
- Content question: contact the teacher.
- Which platform: check the course or teacher instructions.
- Technical problem: use YCDSB’s official D2L or Google Classroom guide and technical-support ticket on the VLE help page.
School-Day: payments, permissions and school administration
Where a school uses it, School-Day may handle trip or activity payments, e-permission, parent-interview signup, extracurricular registration and a child calendar. It is a separate caregiver account.
- Go to School-Day and create or sign in to the caregiver account.
- Use the secure-match key supplied by the school office to link the child.
- Link additional students or caregivers only through the supported process.
- Contact the school office if the key is missing or the wrong child appears.
School-Day is one-way school-to-family communication; it is not a way to email a teacher. It is also not the report-card or attendance system. See the official YCDSB School-Day Q&A.
SchoolMessenger and SafeArrival: notices and attendance
SchoolMessenger carries board and school announcements, emergency and attendance messages, and commercial notices where consent applies. Its SafeArrival function records full-day or partial-day absences.
- Phone: 1-855-856-7862
- Website: go.schoolmessenger.ca
- App: the blue SchoolMessenger app; choose Canada and use the email on file.
Report an absence in advance or before the school bell. Web and app access are available around the clock and allow future absences. If a child is missing from the account, ask the school to correct the official contact record rather than creating duplicate accounts with another email.
Fix the most common problems
| Problem | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Wrong or missing child; old email or phone | Ask the school office to correct the official student/contact record. |
| Forgot connectEd or VLE password | Use YCDSB VLE support. |
| Missing School-Day secure-match key | Contact the school office. |
| SafeArrival or SchoolMessenger access fails | Ask the school to verify the email, contact record and subscription status. |
| Assignment or course content is unclear | Contact the teacher; technical support cannot explain course expectations. |
Protect the family account
- Use the email address the school has on file.
- Do not share student passwords, secure-match keys or screenshots showing student identifiers in parent groups.
- Download report cards to a private device and store them securely.
- Ask the school to update the official record after a move, custody change or new email address.
- Do not create repeated accounts to work around a missing child; that usually makes matching harder.

One rule saves the most time
When a child, email address or phone number is wrong, start with the school office. The office controls the official record that the other systems use.
