The Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association, or OCSTA, supports and represents publicly funded Catholic education at the provincial level. Families may encounter its name in trustee reports, professional learning information, and Catholic Education Week materials.
OCSTA’s mission and vision page describes its leadership and service role. It is useful to distinguish that provincial association from the local school board, school administration, parish, and Ministry of Education. They serve different purposes and do not answer every family question through the same process.
Provincial work and local decisions are different
A provincial association can bring issues and perspectives into wider education discussions. A local school or board still has its own responsibilities, policies, and decision-making arrangements.
If a family has a question about a particular school’s program, assignment, or communication, begin with the appropriate local source. An OCSTA resource can provide context, but it does not establish that a specific YCDSB service or project has been approved.
Similarly, an association’s position on an issue should be identified as that organization’s position. It should not automatically be described as a ministry requirement or a local board decision.
Use trustee learning resources for context
OCSTA’s trustee modules page points to professional learning about governance and board leadership. Families can use that information to understand the kinds of preparation that support responsible trustee work.
A module about a governance topic is a learning resource. The current law, local by-law, policy, and applicable directions remain the sources for a specific decision process. Do not treat completion of a course as proof that every later decision was appropriate, or assume a module replaces the local document.
Find the current Catholic education theme
OCSTA also publishes materials connected with Catholic education themes. Its 2026–2027 theme page identifies Becoming Artisans of Peace for the current school-year theme.
A council, family, or parish group can use the official material as a starting point for reflection and planning. Confirm local dates and arrangements with the organizer. A provincial theme page does not register a child for a parish activity or provide the schedule for every school event.
Check the source before sharing a claim
When forwarding an OCSTA resource, include the page link and identify what it is: an association statement, a learning resource, a theme resource, or historical information. Record the relevant year.
Use this short source check:
- Who issued the material?
- What purpose does it serve?
- Which year or version applies?
- Is it guidance, a position, or a binding local requirement?
- Which local source answers the practical family question?
This keeps helpful provincial information from being mistaken for a school-specific instruction.
Bring the information back to a clear local question
For example, after reading a theme resource, a family can ask how its school is connecting the theme with student learning. After reading about trustee preparation, a parent can ask where the board publishes relevant professional learning information.
Understanding OCSTA’s role helps families use its resources accurately. It adds provincial context while keeping local questions connected with the officials, documents, and organizers responsible for answering them.
